Developing an entirely new type of vehicle is costly and time consuming. The automotive industry has spent hundreds of billions in development already. The industry is prepared to leverage the lessons of the past to advance the technology. But we have not been ready to let go of the systems of the past. This has led to trying to create safety critical systems using parts that were not developed with the necessary level of safety and security built into them. We need to rethink the systems, and assess how each system can adversely affect the vehicle if it fails when there is no human in control to determine a reasonable action.
